AWAKE Exploring Elk Habitats in Eastern Kentucky

Through this project, students in Boyle, Harlan, Breathitt, and Leslie Counties will study a real-life wildlife problem with researchers from UK, the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation who are responding to a highly visible problem of regional interest. Students will apply fundamental research approaches, including field data collection, the use of GPS and GIS technology, radio-telemetry, and forward-looking infrared technology to explore how much land is available for elk in eastern Kentucky, how economic development can be tied to wildlife-related ecotourism, what other animals can share the elk habitat, and what people in eastern Kentucky think about elk and ecotourism.
