CELEBRATING THE SHELTOWEE TRACE
In September 2005, a group of natural resource experts from around Kentucky hiked over 100 miles of the Sheltowee Trace to highlight the Daniel Boone National Forest as a resource for education and recreation. We also be helped the USDA Forest Service celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Forest Service. This year, in 2006, the hikers will complete the journey by hiking the northern portion of the Trace. Highlights of the journey, including photographs and journal entries from individual hikers, will be posted here, on Kentucky Awake.
Along the trace, the hikers will
- meet with students and other Kentuckians at stops along the way
- document their journey on AWAKE by posting photos and journal entries
- study the plants, animals, water, geology, and historical features found along the trail
- develop an educational guide for teachers to use in Kentucky's forests
You Can Participate!
You can join the hikers in September 2006 at
several events along the trace for educational programs. Visit the complete calendar of events for
more information. You can also help by hiking portions of the Sheltowee and sending your experiences
and artwork to Kentucky Awake!
